Narcotic K-9 Detection Team
Officer Reeves and K9 Brody
The mission and purpose of the Selah Police Department’s Narcotic K-9 Detection team is to locate controlled substances and items commonly used to transport, manufacture and distribute narcotics in Selah and throughout the Yakima Valley. Because of Brody’s sense of smell being hundreds of times more sensitive than a person's, K-9 Brody and Officer Reeves assist Officers and Detectives in the execution of narcotic search warrants.
Officer Reeves and Brody are required to train on a regular basis to maintain their certification and efficiency in searching vehicles, buildings and outdoor areas. K-9 Brody is trained to alert in a passive manner. Brody alerts to the scent of narcotics by getting his nose as close to the source of the odor as possible. Brody will sit down to alert his partner. Officer Reeves then rewards Brody with his favorite “Kong” chew toy for each positive alert. Brody by nature is simply a ball happy hound. This natural trait is what makes narcotic detection K-9 teams successful.

 K-9 Rusty Narcotics Detection Dog K-9 Rusty went into service on August 2, 2002. After four years of service to the Selah community and the department, Rusty at 12 years of age, was officially retired on July 27, 2006. Rusty is enjoying his retirement at home with the Reeves family. |
 Master Patrol Officer Bret Reeves & K9 Partner Brody K9 Brody went into service on July 2006 after graduating from the Washington State Patrol K9 Academy. Selah’s K9 team has conducted seven (7) searches resulting in two felony arrests and has logged over fifteen (15) finds of narcotics in vehicles. The United States Army (YTC), Union Gap Police Department and the Yakima Police Department have requested our K9 teams assistance. K9 Brody and all associated K9 training and equipment was made possible and funded with monies from the 3/10ths tax initiative. |

And when our time together is done and when you move up in the world remember me with kind thoughts and tales, for a time we were unbeatable, nothing passed among us undetected.
